March 21, 2025, Peoria, IL - Today, Bryon A. Jarvis,16, was sentenced to 55 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections for the execution-style murder of 17-year-old Dahvie P. Brown-Bey in August 2023. The murder occurred in the East Bluff during broad daylight and was captured on surveillance video from across the street. In that video, a group of kids could be seen hanging out on the sidewalk when another individual rode up to them on a scooter, removed a gun from his waistband, and fired four shots at Dahvie at close range - three of the shots into his head. One of the kids who witnessed the shooting was only 10 years old at the time. During the trial, that witness testified he saw Jarvis shoot his friend Dahvie. A Peoria County Jury found Jarvis guilty of First Degree Murder this past December.
During today's sentencing hearing, nearly three rows of the courtroom were filled with Dahvie's family and loved ones. They spoke tearfully about how he was a quiet boy who loved playing football. Addressing Jarvis, they said, "You didn't just destroy us; you destroyed yourself." However, despite their pain, they have forgiven him and hope that one day, he can understand the harm he has caused to himself.
In delivering Jarvis's sentence, Chief Judge Katherine Gorman expressed her frustration over the youth carrying guns. She echoed the sentiment of Dahvie's mother, saying, "It's not cute, it's not fine, and it's not a video game," and this behavior will not be tolerated.
Jarvis was 14 years old at the time of the murder, and his case was transferred to adult court in December 2023. Under the statute, Jarvis will serve his time in both juvenile and adult facilities and is eligible for parole after 20 years.
