Topeka, Kan. - Washburn University Counseling, Advocacy & Prevention Services (CAPS) will host a series of events throughout April to support survivors, raise awareness and unite the Washburn and Topeka communities in a shared commitment to end sexual assault, abuse and harassment.
"Each April, the Washburn community and the greater Topeka community observe Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM). Through SAAM awareness and educational events this month, we aim to break stigma, promote education and prevention, and spark meaningful conversations about sexual violence. Together, we can continue to create a safer campus, city and community," said Molly Steffes-Herman, associate director, CAPS, Washburn University.
SAAM Candlelight Vigil
Time: 7:30-8:30 p.m., Thursday, April 9
Location: Union Underground, Memorial Union
Survivors, loved ones and advocates from the Washburn community will gather for a night of reflection to honor victims, support survivors and reaffirm a collective commitment to ending sexual violence.
SAAM Day of Action
Date: Thursday, April 16
The Washburn community is encouraged to wear teal, take a selfie and share it on Instagram by tagging CAPS (@WashburnCounseling) or emailing the photo to be featured on the department's Instagram.
Denim Day with Purpose
Date: Wednesday, April 29
The Washburn community can show support by wearing denim, taking a selfie and sharing it on Instagram by tagging CAPS (@WashburnCounseling) or submitting the photo for the department to share.
Survivor Art Night
Time: 5:30-7:30 p.m., Thursday, April 30
Location: Washburn University Campus (exact location to be determined)
CAPS will host a SAAM Survivor Art Night. A small group of survivors who are current Washburn students will gather in a supportive space to create individual watercolor pieces that reflect resilience, healing and personal strength.
