(BOWIE, Md.) - Bowie State University recently commemorated a monumental milestone, celebrating 160 years since its founding on Jan. 9, 1865. Originally established as the Baltimore Normal School for Colored Teachers at Calvert and Saratoga streets in Baltimore, the institution proudly relocated to its current location in Bowie, Maryland, in 1911.
What began as an institution dedicated to offering educational opportunities for Black teachers has flourished into a vibrant university offering more than 65 bachelor's, master's, doctoral, and certificate programs. Among its diverse offerings are cutting-edge disciplines in STEM, including cybersecurity, data analytics, artificial intelligence, and an exciting new master's program in the Internet of Things. According to Bowie State University President Aminta Breaux, Bowie State's evolution encompasses a broader vision.
"We're living in a rapidly changing world," Breaux said. "We want our students to be at the forefront and leading the way with an entrepreneurial mindset."
In a significant display of growth, the university recently inaugurated the new Martin Luther King, Jr. Center, which houses the Communications, Humanities, and History Departments, as well as the ROTC program. The Fine and Performing Arts Department continues to shine, exemplified by the University Concert Choir's recent collaboration with Grammy Award-winning artist Samara Joy in a community Messiah concert, reflecting the university's unwavering commitment to the arts.
Throughout the year, Bowie State will host a series of events honoring its rich legacy and vibrant future. Celebrations will include a Founder's Day event and a 160th Anniversary Gala on April 5, along with the university's upcoming 90th Homecoming this fall. These events aim to engage alumni, students, and the broader Bulldog community in a festive homage to Bowie State's history and ongoing commitment to academic and cultural excellence.
As Bowie State looks ahead, the university remains determined in its mission to educate, inspire, and empower future leaders while honoring the legacy of its past.
