Space ground squirrels? Not exactly.

But what can we learn about human exploration of space from these furry little hibernators?

It's a question UWO-connected researchers have examined and one that earned some high-profile spotlight in a prominent space-science podcast.

On his Sept. 20 Star Talk Radio podcast, renowned astrophysicist and science communicator Neil deGrasse Tyson interviewed University of Wisconsin Oshkosh alumnus Ryan Sprenger, PhD (UWO BS/MS, Biology) on hibernation for deep spaceflight.

Sprenger is one of two UWO Biology alumni serving as scientists with the biotech firm FaunaBio LLC, who have had a research lab partnership at UWO since 2022. The research involves UWO's ground squirrels colony. Sprenger has earned funding for his research from NASA.
