Lamar University is proud to recognize Brittni Silva as the January First Generation Student of the Month.
A native of Port Neches, Texas, Silva is a senior majoring in history with a teaching certification. As a first-generation college student, she represents a significant milestone for her family by becoming the first to complete college and be formally recognized by a university.
Silva says her first-generation status is a source of deep pride, even as it has come with challenges. Balancing coursework with work responsibilities required discipline and careful time management, but she credits those experiences with shaping her growth both academically and personally.
"Being a first-generation student isn't easy work," Silva said. "Having to balance school and work has had its obstacles, but it is so rewarding in the end."
Throughout her time at Lamar University, Silva has found support, encouragement, and a sense of purpose that has prepared her for the classroom and beyond. She says the university has played a defining role in helping her become confident in her abilities and committed to her future as an educator.
"I will forever be grateful for my time at Lamar," Silva said. "It taught me how to be the best at what I do and helped make me who I am today."
Silva's perseverance and determination reflect the mission of Lamar University's First-Generation Connections program, which supports students whose parents or guardians did not complete a four-year degree. The program focuses on more than academic success, offering resources and a sense of community that help first-generation students navigate the social and personal challenges of college life.
