UWF gifted historic book signed by Declaration signer

The University of West Florida Libraries has received a rare historical volume bearing the signature of George Walton, one of the 56 signers of the Declaration of Independence. The book was donated to the University Archives and West Florida History Center as the United States marks the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence.

Walton, a representative from Georgia, was among the youngest signers of the Declaration, affixing his name to the historic document at age 26. His widow and son lived in Pensacola at the start of the Territory of Florida in 1821.

"While George Walton did not visit Pensacola, his widow and son, George Walton Jr., came to Florida as the younger Walton was secretary to our first governor, Andrew Jackson," said Dean DeBolt, UWF archivist. "Walton County is named for the family. It is a thrill to have something that belonged to one of the Founding Fathers."

The signed volume, a satirical poem entitled "Hudibras," by Sam Butler, will join the University's collections as both a research resource and a commemorative artifact, illustrating how individual objects can illuminate larger historical narratives.

Throughout their history, libraries have marked important milestones by collecting, preserving and sharing materials that document the human experience. The addition of this volume reflects that continuing mission and offers students, scholars and visitors an opportunity to encounter a direct link to one of the founding figures of the United States.

"Anniversaries provide an opportunity not only to celebrate but also to reflect," said Stephanie Clark, dean of UWF Libraries. "Libraries serve as stewards of our collective memory. By preserving original artifacts and making them available for research, teaching and public engagement, libraries help connect contemporary audiences with the people and events that shaped our history."

Walton's signature serves as a tangible connection to the generation that established the United States and articulated the principles of liberty and self-government that continue to shape the nation today.

As America observes the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, the University reaffirms its commitment to preserving the historical record of West Florida and fostering a deeper understanding of the nation's past for future generations.
