The bioeconomy is a key cross-sectoral driver of sustainability, green growth, research, innovation and job creation. The EU is promoting the bioeconomy under our "Strategic Framework for a Competitive and Sustainable EU Bioeconomy" of November 2025, this week endorsed by the EU Council.
At the United Nations' Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) in Rome, EU Ambassador Martin Selmayr co-chaired the Group of Friends of the Bioeconomy together with Carla Barroso Carneiro, Brazil's experienced Ambassador to the UN in Rome.
This week, we co-hosted, together with FAO, a very well-attended meeting of our Group of Friends of the Bioeconomy, on the occasion of International Forest Day. Representatives from all regions (including from Colombia, Brazil, Panama, Austria, Sweden, Japan, Tanzania, Malaysia, Australia, Serbia, Israel) presented and discussed their best practices and approaches to the bioeconomy, with a particular focus on the forest-bioeconomy.
Our aim: to shape a global sustainable bioeconomy agenda and to promote fair and rules-based trade; and to advance convergence on sustainability frameworks. The G20 Principles on Bioeconomy and FAO's Aspirational Principles on the Bioeconomy encourage such international cooperation.
