WASHINGTON, D.C. - Today, Senator Baldwin took to the Senate floor to highlight the need to reverse Republicans' deep cuts to Medicaid and rural hospitals through their Big Ugly Bill and stop Republicans from taking away health care tax breaks that help 22 million Americans afford their Affordable Care Act (ACA) coverage. If Republicans refuse to come to the table and extend these tax credits for families, over 20 million Americans with ACA coverage will see their premiums skyrocket by 75% on average, including an estimated four million Americans who will be priced out of care altogether.
"We need to lower the cost of health care, not take it away from families. I simply refuse to just go along to get along because the people I represent are truly struggling, and the solution is right in front of us," said Senator Baldwin. "The path to keep the government open and stop health care costs from rising for millions is on the table. This whole idea of a shutdown is totally avoidable. If Republicans refuse to see what is right in front of them, then a shutdown is on them, and Wisconsinites will know exactly who to thank when their health care costs skyrocket or is simply stripped away."
Last week, U.S. Senator Tammy Baldwin (D-WI) made four stops in Weston, Green Bay, Milwaukee, and Mount Horeb to highlight the need to extend ACA tax breaks that help 270,000 Wisconsinites afford their insurance. Unless Republicans act, the ACA Enhanced Premium Tax Credits will expire at the end of the year. Over 300,000 Wisconsinites use ACA coverage, including 270,000 who receive premium tax credits that save them on average $585 each month.
