To Address Maryland’s Energy Supply Challenges, BGE, Delmarva Power & Pepco Pursue Battery Storage Projects

As Maryland faces tightening energy supplies and rising regional power costs, BGE, Delmarva Power and Pepco are advancing new battery storage projects designed to make better use of the electricity already on the grid and help reduce pressure on customers' bills. The effort is an example of the Exelon Promise in action-seeking solutions to Maryland's energy supply crisis, putting customers first and working to keep power bills as low as possible.

These projects would store electricity when more supply is available and deliver it back to the grid during periods of peak demand, when energy is most scarce and expensive. Together the utilities are seeking 43.5 megawatts of battery storage capacity-enough energy to power about 9,000 homes. The effort is part of a broader response to Maryland's energy supply challenges and the state's energy storage goals. BGE, Delmarva Power and Pepco are seeking competitive proposals from third-party developers to build, operate and maintain battery systems under long-term agreements.
