Cast and Crew

Often described as the "perfect musical comedy," "Guys and Dolls" has captivated audiences since its 1950 Broadway premiere. Director of Dramatic Arts Dan Bielinski, who performed in the show during his own college years, said the musical's enduring popularity is no accident.

He points to several reasons the production has remained a staple of American theater for more than seven decades.

First is its unforgettable score by Frank Loesser. "These are fantastic songs," Bielinski said. "Numbers like 'Luck Be a Lady,' 'Sit Down, You're Rockin' the Boat,' and 'A Bushel and a Peck' have become iconic standards."

Beyond the music, the show transports audiences into what Bielinski calls the "Runyonesque" world created by author Damon Runyon. Based on Runyon's short stories, the musical unfolds in a stylized, mythical Manhattan populated by gamblers, grifters and showgirls who speak in witty, heightened dialogue.

"This 'mythical' Manhattan is filled with gamblers, grifters, and showgirls who speak in a stylized, witty, almost cartoonish way that is endlessly entertaining," Bielinski said.

At the heart of the story are four richly drawn characters - Sky Masterson (Liam Irwin of Chippewa Falls, WI), Sarah Brown (Eleanor Koop of Ham Lake, MN), Nathan Detroit (Kalen Hill of Minot, ND) and Miss Adelaide (Maria Welter of Albertville, MN). Bielinski describes them as "fantastically written characters, with a blend of romantic idealism and comic cynicism." Even supporting roles such as Nicely Johnson are given show-stopping opportunities.

"The entire show is a burst of beautifully chaotic energy that is a joy to watch," Bielinski said.

The University of Mary production brings together a large collaborative team of student performers, crew members and orchestra musicians, reflecting the strong partnership between the university's dramatic arts and music programs. Set against the grandeur of the historic Belle Mehus Auditorium, audiences can expect a lively theatrical experience filled with vibrant choreography, bold character portrayals and timeless songs that have defined American musical theater for generations.

With its brassy score, colorful underworld charm and heartfelt romance, "Guys and Dolls" promises an evening - or afternoon - of laughter, music and theatrical magic in the heart of downtown Bismarck.

Tickets are $10. University of Mary students may receive one free ticket with their MCard. Tickets will be available at will-call.
