WNC Students Build Confidence, Career Skills at Workshop with Nationally Recognized Speaker

Apr 24, 2026

Students, faculty and staff at Western Nevada College gained valuable insight into communication and career readiness during a dynamic workshop led by nationally recognized speaker Dr. Jessica Houston on April 23.

Dr. Houston presented "Communicate with Confidence: Standing Out in Career Conversations" at Carson Nugget Hall, offering practical strategies to help students strengthen one of the most essential skills for career success - effective communication.

Recognized by Real Leaders as one of the Top 50 speakers in the world, Dr. Houston brought a wealth of experience from working with Fortune 500 companies, universities and global conferences. Her interactive session focused on building confidence, developing communication strategies and helping students stand out in professional environments.

Throughout the workshop, Dr. Houston emphasized the importance of self-leadership and self-awareness, encouraging students to trust their abilities and take intentional steps toward their goals.

"Confidence isn't about knowing everything - it's about trusting yourself to figure it out," she shared. "People who get what they want aren't hiding. Share your brilliance."

Students also learned practical techniques for succeeding in interviews, including preparing thoroughly, clearly communicating their strengths and value, and following up with employers after interviews. Dr. Houston encouraged attendees to practice a concise personal introduction, maintain strong body language and approach opportunities with preparation and purpose.

In addition to career strategies, the workshop addressed overcoming self-doubt and handling setbacks. Dr. Houston advised students to view rejection as a temporary event rather than a reflection of their worth and to continue moving forward by seeking new opportunities and building connections.

The event was hosted by Western Nevada College's Realizing Opportunities for the American Dream to Succeed (ROADS) program, which aims to equip students with the tools and support needed to thrive academically and professionally. Attendees also enjoyed a Chick-fil-A lunch.

By combining inspiration with actionable advice, the workshop provided attendees with practical skills and renewed confidence as they prepare to enter the workforce and pursue their goals.
