Fort Worth Zoo nets $3.25 million for World of Primates renovation

Fort Worth Zoo nets $3.25 million for World of Primates renovation

Published on September 10, 2026

The Fort Worth Zoo announced a matching gift of $3.25 million from the John and Shirley Dean Foundation to support Phase 2 of the World of Primates renovation.

Because of the Deans' generosity, every dollar donated to the transformation will be matched 4 to 1, meaning a gift of $10 will result in $50 for the Zoo.

To date, the Zoo has raised more than 70% of the required match from local individuals, foundations and corporations. Now, the Zoo asks for the community's support in generating the remaining funds to unlock the full impact of the Deans' gift.

Construction on Phase 2 of the World of Primates renovation begins this month and will fill an existing moat and add high-strength, flexible, hand-woven stainless steel mesh walls and roofing, which will be supported by towering 25- to 30-foot structural columns and wire rope. These improvements will not only allow guests to get closer than ever before for more meaningful views of the troop, but also double the size of the habitat.

New and improved climbing structures will be included in their space, which will encourage natural behaviors, increase physical activity and enhance the well-being of the Zoo's beloved gorilla family.

More than three decades old, the World of Primates is the oldest complex in the Zoo. Opened in 1992, it has been well-loved by more than 34 million guests.

Home to the Zoo's primate species, including three of the four great apes - gorilla, orangutan and bonobo - the reimagined indoor space is now also home to a two-toed sloth.

In April, the Zoo shared the completion of Phase 1 of the World of Primates renovation and a grand reopening, which included a dramatic overhaul of critical behind-the-scenes systems and much-needed improvements to guest areas and animal habitats.

Phase 2 will take the transformation even further with the expanded gorilla habitat and additional improvements designed to enhance animal wellbeing and the guest experience.

With North Texas Giving Day underway, the Zoo welcomes gifts of support for the renovation on its website. https://www.fortworthzoo.org/gorillas
