The Sumter County Board of County Commissioners is excited to announce the official opening of Lake Okahumpka Park's upgraded disc golf course. County leaders gathered today for a ribbon-cutting ceremony at the entrance of the course to celebrate the completed project and formally invite the public to utilize the brand-new park feature.
The disc golf course closed in May 2025 to undergo extensive construction to expand its features, scaling in size from a 9-hole course to an 18-hole course. Additional upgrades include two baskets per hole, new golf tees, and concrete tee pads.
"These upgrades support the County's growing population and interest in the sport," said County Administrator Bradley Arnold. "We're hoping the upgraded course will elevate the overall park experience at Lake Okahumpka and attract disc golf players from across the state."
Public interest in disc golf is steadily growing across the United States. With over 10,000 courses, the U.S. is considered the world's biggest disc golfing country, making it an appealing destination for competitive and recreational players. To attract people at all skill levels, Sumter County partnered with World Champion Disc Golf Design LLC to design the course. Founded by a three-time world champion, the company brought a tremendous amount of expertise and enthusiasm to the design process.
"This course has something to offer to everyone, no matter their skill level. People can make incredible memories playing casually or professionally on this course," said Freddie Fudge, Sumter County's Facilities and Parks Manager. "We partnered with one of the best companies to create an inclusive, engaging, and fun course for people of all ages."
Disc golfers can play on the new course, spanning 130 acres of the park, for free. If someone is interested in organizing a tournament, we encourage them to make a reservation on the website below.
