Cal State LA receives two Golden Globe Foundation grants for its television, film, and journalism programs

The Golden Globe Foundation has awarded two grants to Cal State LA, reaffirming its longstanding partnership with the institution and providing vital support for the university's television, film, and journalism programs in the 2025-26 academic year.

Cal State LA will receive a $38,000 grant for its Television, Film, and Media Fund and a $17,000 grant for its Diversity in Journalism Fund.

"These sustaining grants fund career and project-based education across the department, funding journalism internships, film projects, our Golden Eagle Film Festival, and more," said Professor Kristiina Hackel, associate chair of the Department of Television, Film and Media Studies (TVFM) at Cal State LA. "Our TVFM department is deeply grateful for the Golden Globe Foundation's ongoing and heartening support always, but especially during this year."

This year, the foundation awarded grants to 86 nonprofit organizations through the foundation's philanthropic program. These grants will support film and journalism schools, mentorship and training programs, higher-education fellowships, investigative journalism, free speech initiatives, film restoration and preservation, and programs uplifting underserved communities. A Grantee Mixer will be held on Saturday, Oct. 25.

"The Golden Globe Foundation is proud to continue its longtime commitment to philanthropy by providing financial support to a wide range of impactful nonprofit programs," said Golden Globe Foundation president Adam Tanswell in a statement. "This year's grantees play significant roles in empowering and enriching their communities. We are delighted to fund these meaningful initiatives in arts, culture, education, journalism and press freedom during a time of increasing need."

For more than two decades, the foundation has offered transformative support to Cal State LA's diverse, low-income students through scholarships, equipment grants, thesis funds, and emergency assistance during the pandemic.

This year's funding will provide Cal State LA students with additional support for film festivals and their works, as well as internships in Southern California newsrooms that give student journalists valuable professional experience.

The Golden Eagle Film Festival, which is scheduled for the upcoming spring term at Cal State LA, will showcase the creative work of Cal State LA's filmmaking community, providing a platform for students to screen their projects and connect with peers and industry professionals.

The Department of TVFM at Cal State LA offers a Bachelor of Arts in Television, Film and Media Studies, a Bachelor of Arts in Journalism, a Master of Arts in Television, Film and Media Studies, and a Master of Fine Arts in Television, Film and Theatre in collaboration with the Department of Theatre and Dance.

The MFA program brings the three creative arms of the entertainment industry-content creation, writing, and acting-together in cohorts. The Department of TVFM is housed in the state-of-the-art Television, Film and Media Center. Hollywood's top producers, directors, screenwriters, and actors often serve as guest speakers and mentors.

Cal State LA's journalism program is part of the Department of TVFM. Through its classes, student media outlets, and collaborations with professional newsrooms, Cal State LA's journalism program trains students from traditionally underrepresented backgrounds. Cal State LA's journalism students have been honored with over two dozen awards and honors in recent years.

The Department of TVFM remains committed to amplifying the diverse voices and equipping graduates with the knowledge and skills they will need to achieve professional success.

Since 1989, the Golden Globe Foundation (formerly the Hollywood Foreign Press Association) has donated more than $55 million to entertainment-related nonprofit organizations, academic programs, and organizations protecting press freedom, and funded the restoration of 138 classic films.

Funding for the foundation's philanthropy is made possible through licensing fees from the Golden GlobeĀ® Awards.
