Local law enforcement agencies throughout Washoe County are increasing enforcement efforts in response to the growing trend of illegal street racing and roadway takeover events across the region. As summer approaches, agencies have seen a rise in calls for service and community complaints involving reckless driving, noise disturbances, and the takeover of parking lots and roadways.
These events pose a significant public safety risk due to dangerous driving behaviors, large uncontrolled crowds, and the potential for crashes, injuries, and violence. They
also create ongoing quality-of-life concerns for nearby neighborhoods and businesses, particularly during late-night hours.
The Reno Police Department, Washoe County Sheriff's Office, Nevada State Police, Sparks Police Department, University of Nevada Police Department, and other partners are working collaboratively to address these issues through enforcement and deterrence. Enforcement actions may include traffic citations, arrests, and vehicle towing and impoundments, along with efforts to identify repeat offenders and event organizers. These collaborative operations will continue regularly.
A total of 26 citations were issued and two DUI arrests were made during the operation. Of those, the Reno Police Department issued six citations and made one DUI arrest.
