Norton Rose Fulbright advises Microsoft on carbon removal offtake agreement from Louisiana BECCS project

Global law firm Norton Rose Fulbright has advised Microsoft on a long-term agreement for the purchase of high-quality engineered carbon removal units (CRUs) from C2X subsidiary, Beaver Lake Renewable Energy.

The CRUs arise from the bio-energy with carbon capture and storage (BECCS) project, near Pineville in Louisiana. Beaver Lake will deliver 3.6 million high-quality CRUs to Microsoft over a 12-year period.

Construction of the BECCS project is expected to begin in the second half of 2026 with operations expected to start during 2029.

The multi-disciplinary team from Norton Rose Fulbright was led by London-based projects and carbon markets partner Laura Kiwelu, who was supported by counsel Claire Whitney, with US support provided by partners John McBride, Caileen Gamache and Sameer Ghaznavi.

Laura Kiwelu commented:

"We are delighted to have supported Microsoft on this landmark carbon removal agreement, which sets a new benchmark for the industry. The Beaver Lake project demonstrates the transformative potential of high-quality carbon removal units, not only in advancing climate goals and in enabling advanced technologies and low-carbon fuels, but also in shaping the future of the global carbon market."
