All lanes across I-64 Fort Hill Bridge expected to reopen by 10 a.m.

The center westbound lane on Interstate 64 across the Fort Hill Bridge in Charleston will reopen by 10 a.m. Friday, July 11, 2025, following work to repair a large pothole. All three westbound lanes will then be open across the bridge.

The left and center lanes were closed between the Virginia Street and Oakwood Road interstate ramps during the night of Wednesday, July 9, 2025, after a large pothole developed. West Virginia Division of Highways (WVDOH) repair crews filled the hole with a concrete mixture during the day on Thursday, July 10, 2025. The WVDOH was able to reopen the left lane at about 8 p.m. Thursday to help ease congestion caused by the double lane closure.

WVDOH engineers originally predicted there would be lane closures on the bridge through the weekend. However, the WVDOH expected to reopen the center lane at 10 a.m., Friday, July 11, 2025, after allowing the fresh concrete patch to properly cure.

"When giving a timeframe for opening emergency issues like this, we like to be conservative to account for unknowns that may creep up," said WVDOH State Highway Engineer Jake Bumgarner, P.E.
"Fortunately, in this case, the repair work went relatively smoothly. We had several organizations under the DOH umbrella coming together to get the repair completed as quickly as possible and the road back up."
