The Waco-McLennan County Library is inviting the community to take part in the 2026 Mayor's Summer Reading Challenge: Summer of Stories, a free summer-long reading program designed to keep readers of all ages engaged, learning, and having fun throughout the summer.

The challenge officially begins June 1 and runs through July 31. Participants can sign up using the Beanstack app, track their reading days, and earn prizes for every 10 days they read. The program is open to children, teens, adults, and families.

The library will kick off in the summer with a special Kickoff Party on Saturday, May 30, at all four library locations from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. The community can register for the challenge, pick up a free tote bag and book while supplies last.

"Last year's record-breaking participation of 4,166 readers showed just how much Waco values lifelong learning. The Mayor's Summer Reading Challenge continues to bring families, students, and readers of all ages together through the shared joy of reading," said Rachel Moore, Library Youth Services Coordinator.

Throughout the summer, the library will host performers, story times, hands-on activities, how-to classes, and family events across the system. Featured summer performers include animal encounters, science shows, juggling performances, and dog trick shows.

"Summer reading helps students maintain reading skills while also creating opportunities for families and community members to connect through books, learning, and creativity," said Roberto Zapata, Library Director. "We're so excited to make reading fun and accessible for everyone this summer."

Participants can register by downloading the Beanstack app, adding the Waco-McLennan County Library, and creating a free account. Readers can then track their progress throughout the summer to earn prizes and qualify for additional raffle drawings.

How to Participate:

  • Step 1: Visit Wacolibrary.org to learn about using Beanstack or visit any location to register.
  • Step 2: Track your reading all summer long in the app. The more you read, the more you win and collect prizes along the way.

All Waco-McLennan County Library locations are free and open to the public. Library cards are available at no cost to McLennan County residents.
