Long Beach, CA - The City of Long Beach Department of Parks, Recreation and Marine (PRM) is celebrating Older Americans Month this May with a variety of free programming and events for adults ages 50 and older. Nationally recognized annually each May, Older Americans Month celebrates the contributions of older adults and reaffirms commitments to uplifting these communities through inclusive and impactful programming and services.
"Our older adults are an integral part of our community, and Older Americans Month is a time for us to celebrate their lasting contributions and reaffirm our commitment to supporting their health, social connections and overall wellbeing," said Mayor Rex Richardson. "We are dedicated to creating inclusive spaces where residents ages 50 and older can stay active, engaged and valued, throughout Older Americans Month and all year round."
Led by the Administration for Community Living, this year's Older Americans Month theme, Champion Your Health, focuses on prevention, wellness and personal responsibility as key pillars of healthy aging and encourages older adults to take an active role in their health.
To celebrate Older Americans Month, PRM will host a variety of specialty programming and events. This year's signature events include the return of the Older Americans Blooming Talent Show where adults can showcase their unique talents and shine onstage; the Silverado Senior Carnival Extravaganza featuring carnival games, a live DJ and magic show, line dancing and delicious food; and a brand new field trip excursion to the Los Angeles County Fair. Additional activities include a sound bath and nature walk, the Sustainable Independence Resource Fair, pickleball tournament, movie night and more.
Details for the complete list of events are available on the Older Adults Program webpage at lbcity.info/seniorprograms. While events are for adults ages 50 and above, community members may attend the pickleball tournament and talent show. Registration for select events begins April 13.
Older Americans Month is hosted by PRM with additional sponsorship from the Port of Long Beach.
To stay active and healthy, adults ages 50 and up are encouraged to practice the following lifestyle tips, provided by the Administration for Community Living:
