Rep. Mike Cameron Celebrates Unanimous House Passage of Legislation to Allow Implementation of Newborn Safety Devices and Legislation to Update State Incest Law

ATLANTA - State Representative Mike Cameron (R-Rossville) celebrates the unanimous House passage of House Bills 350 and 57. Sponsored by Rep. Cameron, House Bill 350 would allow certain medical facilities to implement newborn safety devices, and House Bill 57 would add a step-grandparent and step-grandchild to state law regarding incest.

"I was proud to sponsor both pieces of legislation, and I am incredibly grateful for my House colleagues' support of these two measures," said Rep. Cameron. "House Bills 350 and 57 are crucial steps toward protecting Georgia's children and families. By allowing newborn safety devices, we would give mothers in crisis a safe, anonymous option, while ensuring infants receive immediate care and a path to adoption or foster care. At the same time, HB 57 would further support families and children by including step-grandparents and children into state law regarding the crime of incest. I am hopeful for the Senate's favorable consideration and for these bills to become law for the benefit of our great state."

House Bill 350, bipartisan legislation that Rep. Cameron sponsored, would update Georgia's Safe Place for Newborns Act. HB 350 would allow fire stations, medical facilities, police stations and ambulance services to implement newborn safety devices for use by mothers who need to safely surrender their newborns. Newborn safety devices are enclosed, locked and continuously monitored receptacles designed to allow for the safe surrender of a newborn at locations equipped to provide medical care, facilitate transport to a hospital and, ultimately, support placement into foster care or adoption.

House Bill 57, bipartisan legislation that Rep. Cameron sponsored, would add a step-grandparent and step-grandchild to the list of people who are prohibited from having sexual intercourse or sodomy with one another.
