White House: Illicit fentanyl is closer to a chemical weapon than a narcotic

Albuquerque, NM - Yesterday, the White House officially designated fentanyl as a weapon of mass destruction. This historic announcement will change how the drug is viewed by the Department of Justice, the State Department, the Department of War, and law enforcement. The Trump Administration is ensuring that illicit fentanyl isn't just approached as a deadly narcotic, but as a chemical weapon responsible for killing hundreds of thousands of Americans.

"Fentanyl is one of, if not the single biggest threat facing Western civilization today, and I could not be more proud of the Trump Administration for designating the drug as a weapon of mass destruction," said Chairwoman Barela. "President Trump has never wavered in his commitment to protect Americans from harmful drugs, and this announcement is the latest example of that." This move by the Trump Administration should garner bipartisan support, as it will undoubtedly save the lives of American men, women, and children.

The numbers are staggering and should terrify every American. Over a quarter of a million Americans have lost their lives to fentanyl overdoses since 2021. It is the leading cause of death for Americans between the ages of 18 and 45. If it were not for the heroes enforcing our border and the agents with the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), this tragedy would be much worse than it is. According to the DEA, 60 million fentanyl-laced counterfeit pills and nearly 8,000 pounds of fentanyl powder were seized in 2024 alone. The amount of fentanyl seized in just 2024 and 2025 was enough to kill 727 million people.

This is also a problem that has plagued New Mexico for years. Fentanyl-related deaths have, on average, been responsible for killing multiple New Mexicans each day. This crisis has made our streets less safe, and Democratic leaders in New Mexico have failed to address this issue with any substance at all. Democrats, including many in New Mexico, are too busy criticizing President Trump's unprecedented accomplishments in combating drugs, securing our borders, and protecting Americans from dangerous illegal immigrants. This latest move from President Trump has made our state-and our country-much safer.
