NIFA Seeks Applications For Co-funded Research On Topics Identified By Commodity Boards

Twelve commodity boards have submitted 18 topics for proposed research being solicited through the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI), NIFA's flagship competitive grants program.

The topics - published in the Fiscal Year 2026 AFRI Foundational and Applied Science Request for Applications under the program area priority A1811 AFRI Commodity Board Co-funding Topics - demonstrate how Federally funded agricultural research can fuel the Nation's agricultural economy.

Notable in this year's topics is an expanded emphasis on developing new and existing markets, as well as enhancing farm profitability through improved management practices and labor efficiencies. Other topics focus on improving health outcomes, advancing plant breeding, or better understanding consumer behavior.

The 12 participating boards are:

  • American Pecan Promotion Board
  • Arkansas Rice Research and Promotion Board
  • National Pork Board
  • National Peanut Board
  • Dairy Management, Inc.
  • Hass Avocado Board
  • USA Dry Pea and Lentil
  • United Soybean Board
  • United Sorghum Checkoff Program
  • California Walnut Commission
  • The Cotton Board
  • Kansas Wheat Commission

Commodity Boards

The farm bill allows eligible national and state commodity boards to propose topics for research and outreach that they are willing to equally co-fund with NIFA through the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative.

The maximum award amounts for each topic area are determined by the commodity board proposing the co-funding topic. The commodity board and AFRI each contribute roughly half of the budget. Normally only one proposal per topic is funded, but additional proposals that meet NIFA's rigorous peer review criteria may be funded if funds are available.

All applications to the A1811 AFRI Commodity Board Co-funding Topics are due on October 2, 2025.
