Albemarle Correctional offender dies in apparent suicide

Ivan Jahir Blanco #1709156 died this morning in an apparent suicide in Albemarle Correctional Institution, Stanly County.

Blanco was found unresponsive in his cell at 3:35 a.m. Facility staff performed life-saving measures and called EMS. He was pronounced dead at 3:57 a.m.

Local law enforcement and the N.C. Office of the Chief Medical Examiner are investigating, as is required in these circumstances. The N.C. Department of Adult Correction is cooperating fully and conducting its own investigation.

Blanco, 32, was convicted of drug trafficking by a Cabarrus County court in April 2023. His projected release date was in April 2030.
