Sheri Copanic joins UToledo as associate vice president for risk management and chief risk officer effective Oct. 21.

Copanic has 20 years of experience in strategic compliance and risk management. She most recently worked as director of risk management for NexCore Group, a Denver-based healthcare real estate company. Prior to that, Copanic spent more than a decade with Toledo-based Welltower Inc.

"This is an important role that supports the entire University," said Larry Kelley, executive vice president for finance and administration and chief financial officer. "Sheri has extensive experience in risk management and compliance, and she's also a Toledo resident who is committed to our community. We are excited to add her to our team."

Copanic will oversee the development and implementation of UToledo's enterprise-wide approach to risk management, including academics, clinical operations, research and athletics.

"In risk management, it's critical to take an enterprise-wide approach," Copanic said. "People understand the risks for their individual departments or function but having one person who can consolidate that information and look at the risk across the University and how those individual issues interact with each other is really important. I'm excited to help UToledo impact the present and future of the community by helping UToledo respond to risks and opportunities."

Copanic holds an M.B.A. in accounting and a B.A. in business administration and accounting from Baldwin-Wallace College. She is a current board member of the YWCA of Northwest Ohio, and in 2020 was named to the "20 Under 40" list, an annual recognition of 20 distinguished community leaders from northwest Ohio and southeast Michigan who are younger than 40 years old.
