WORKING VISIT OF THE DEPUTY PRIME MINISTER AND MINISTER OF FOREIGN AFFAIRS
AND FOREIGN TRADE OF LUXEMBOURG TO MALAYSIA
8- 9 SEPTEMBER 2025
Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade of Luxembourg, H.E. Xavier Bettel undertook a Working Visit to Malaysia on 8 and 9 September 2025. This was his first visit to Malaysia since assuming office in November 2023.
On 9 September 2025, H.E. Bettel paid a courtesy call on YAB Prime Minister Dato' Seri Anwar Ibrahim in Putrajaya, where both sides reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening bilateral cooperation, particularly in trade, investment, finance and logistics. They also exchanged views on regional and international developments, including Malaysia's ASEAN Chairmanship, Malaysia- European Union relations, including the ongoing negotiations on Malaysia-EU Free Trade Agreement (MEUFTA), and the situation in the Middle East, particularly Palestine.
YB Foreign Minister hosted a luncheon in honour of H.E. Bettel and his delegation. Both ministers discussed new avenues for cooperation in digital innovation, sustainable and green finance as well as Islamic finance. They also agreed to enhance people-to-people exchanges through educational, cultural and tourism linkages. The discussion further touched on ASEAN-European Union relations, noting the importance of both regions in promoting rules-based multilateralism, free trade and global stability.
Malaysia and Luxembourg have enjoyed close and friendly relations since the establishment of diplomatic ties in 1957. In 2024, the trade value between Malaysia and Luxembourg was RM139 million (USD30.22 million), with Malaysia exporting primarily electronic components and manufactured goods, while importing specialised machinery and high-value services from Luxembourg.
