Schedule: Tuesday, September 8, 2026, through Thursday, October 15, 2026

Contra Costa County - Caltrans will continue fiber-optic cable installation and other construction activities for the Middle Mile Broadband Project along Interstate 580, including work across the Richmond-San Rafael Bridge. Caltrans will reduce the availability of the breakdown shoulder lane on the bridge. However, there will be no disruption to the current bike shuttle and bridge bike/ped path hours of operations.

Crews are scheduled to conduct a series of operations associated with the placement of almost 50,000 linear feet of fiberoptic cable from Tuesday, September 8, 2026, through Thursday, October 15, 2026, including overnight lane closures.

Construction work in the breakdown shoulder lane will take place behind the moveable barrier/bike path, for worker safety and to minimize traffic disruptions.

Construction Schedule for WB Interstate 580 Richmond San Rafael Bridge

• Tuesday, September 8 - Thursday, September 10, 2026
  • Overnight lane #2 closures will be required from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. on9/8 and 9/9.
• Monday, September 14 - Thursday, October 8, 2026
  • #3 lane will remain closed during construction (no break down lane).
• Monday, October 12 - Thursday, October 15, 2026
  • Overnight lane #2 closures will be required from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. on10/12, 10/13 and 10/14.
• Notes:

Traffic Impacts
Motorists should expect intermittent lane closures associated with proofing and final cable placement operations during nighttime. Other construction activities will take place behind the existing barrier and are not expected to require traffic lane closures. The construction schedule is subject to change based on field conditions and construction progress.

Changeable Message Signs (CMS) will provide advance notice for motorists traveling in the area. Drivers may experience delays and are advised to plan ahead and allow extra time. Be work-zone alert, drive with caution through the work zone.
