A New Chapter: Reichardt Community Recreation Center Now Open

Des Moines, Iowa
- Wednesday, April 29, 2026 -
Earlier today, City officials, community leaders, and neighborhood residents gathered at 915 College Ave for a ribbon-cutting and dedication ceremony to celebrate the grand opening of the Reichardt Community Recreation Center.

Standing on the historic site of the former Grubb YMCA, the new $21 million facility represents a renewed commitment to the neighborhood. The Reichardt Center is designed to serve as a vital gathering space and a cornerstone of community connection for Des Moines residents for generations to come. The journey toward today's opening began in 2021. Des Moines Parks and Recreation prioritized community-led design, hosting numerous input sessions to ensure the facility reflected the needs and desires of the residents it serves. The completion of this state-of-the-art facility was made possible through the generosity of private donors and corporate partners who shared the vision of an accessible and innovative recreation hub for the north side of Des Moines.

The Reichardt Community Recreation Center is packed with modern amenities that cover everything from fitness to creative play. For residents looking to stay active, the weight room and cardio equipment are great options, or take a few laps on the elevated walking loop and in the indoor pool. The new space also keeps younger visitors in mind with a dedicated "Idea Lab" and gaming lounge. For local events and gatherings, the center offers a full gymnasium, a conference room, and a community room that includes a complete kitchen.

The center is now open to the public Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM - 8:00 PM. To ensure the facility remains accessible to everyone, the Des Moines Parks and Recreation has implemented a the following fee schedule:

Age Gym Admission (Pool Not Included) Gym and Pool Admission
Youth (0-18) $0 $3 (Ages 2 and under FREE)
Adult (19-59) $2 $5
Senior (60+) $1 $4

To celebrate the opening, admission to the Reichardt Community Recreation Center is FREE for all guests through Friday, May 1, allowing all residents and visitors an opportunity to explore the amenities and experience the new space firsthand.
