Dakota State University Professor Dr. Omar El-Gayar has been appointed by the ABET Computing Area Delegation (CAD) as a member-at-large of the Executive Committee for the 2026-27 ABET Computing Accreditation Commission (CAC).
"Dr. El-Gayar's appointment to the ABET CAC Executive Committee is a significant honor and a win for DSU," said Dr. Rebecca Hoey, Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic & Student Affairs. "Faculty leadership at this level helps shape national standards, keeping our programs aligned with the future of computing education. It also brings valuable insight back to our students, faculty, and partners."
ABET is the premier global accreditor of college and university programs in applied and natural sciences, computing, engineering, and engineering technology. The organization is a non-profit, non-governmental entity that awards accreditation for a limited number of years, not to exceed six, with reevaluation required to ensure continuous program quality.
"I am honored to have the opportunity to continue serving the computing education community through this role," said El-Gayar. "ABET-CAC plays a vital part in advancing excellence and innovation in computing programs worldwide. I look forward to contributing to this mission and bringing back insights that will support our students, faculty, and partners at Dakota State University."
El-Gayar was unanimously approved as a member-at-large and his appointment letter read, "Your selection by the nominating committee of the Computing Accreditation Commission, and approval by the Computing Area Delegation are testimony to your dedication and excellent service as a commissioner. Your promotion to the rank of Executive Committee Member (ExCom) and Editor-1 highlights your professional contributions and extra efforts in preparing concise review statements."
In August, DSU's Bachelor of Science in Computer Science program earned accreditation from ABET.
