The Chairperson of the African Union Commission, H.E. Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, held a constructive meeting with the U.S. Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs, H.E. Ms. Allison Hooke on the margins of #UNGA80 in New York, to review AU-U.S. cooperation.
Discussions focused on regional priorities including U.S. support for health &, humanitarian response, social sectors, stabilisation efforts in Somalia, AU-led mediation in the DRC and Sudan, and strengthening trade under AGOA.
The Chairperson encouraged the U.S. to remain actively engaged in these areas, while Under Secretary Hooker
commended the AU's leadership on the continent and assured continued U.S. support to African countries & AU diplomatic initiatives, including in the DRC, Sudan, & Libya.
They also discussed exploring mutually convenient dates for the Annual US-AU High-Level Dialogue.
The meeting was also attended by H.E. Amb. Vincent D. Spera, Deputy Assistant Secretary, Bureau of African Affairs.
