Rep. Scholten Announces More Than $1 Million in Community Project Funding for the Grand Rapids Water Resource Recovery Facility

WASHINGTON, DC - U.S. Representative Hillary Scholten (D-MI-03) announced the City of Grand Rapids will receive $1,092,000 in federal support through the Community Project Funding (CPF) process. The funding will be used to upgrade the ultraviolet (UV) disinfection system at the city's water resource recovery facility. Congresswoman Scholten spoke at the facility last week to celebrate the funding.

"I'm thrilled to announce this Community Project Funding award of more than a million dollars to support the City of Grand Rapids' water resource recovery facility," said Rep. Scholten. "This project will help upgrade important equipment to ensure every family in our community has access to clean, safe drinking water, as well as protect our local waterways through effective disinfection processes. I'm always proud to deliver high-impact federal investments like this one to my district, and I look forward to seeing the positive impacts of the funding."

"On behalf of Grand Rapids, I extend sincere thanks to Representative Hillary Scholten for her crucial role in securing federal funding for the UV disinfection system upgrade at our Water Resource Recovery Facility. This project is vital as our current equipment, over 20 years old, is unsupported and costly to maintain. The upgrade will ensure compliance with state and federal regulations, enhance wastewater disinfection, protect public health, and preserve our waterways. We deeply value the partnership that enables such essential infrastructure improvements," said Grand Rapids City Manager Mark Washington.

Specifically, the funding will be used for the design and construction of a new system to replace outdated equipment. The overarching goal is to ensure continued compliance with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), protect public health, and safeguard the Grand River and Lake Michigan by maintaining effective wastewater disinfection.

Each year, Congress considers appropriations bills that fund the federal government, and Community Project Funding (CPF) is part of that process. The House Appropriations Committee allows Members of Congress to request these resources for a limited number of local projects, which reflects Rep. Scholten's ongoing work to bring federal investment back to Michigan's Third Congressional District.
