The Iowa Board of Regents has approved a tuition increase for University of Iowa students to address inflationary costs and to maintain the quality of education Iowans expect.

At its June 12 meeting, the board approved a $279 increase to undergraduate base tuition for resident and nonresident students. For graduate students, the approved tuition increase is $350 for both resident and nonresident students. The increases will take effect at the start of the fall 2025 semester for all students.

"A University of Iowa education remains one of the most accessible and valuable investments students can make in their future," says Kevin Kregel, executive vice president and provost. "This tuition increase will help sustain the programs, support services, and learning environments that position our students for long-term success."

For the 2025-26 academic year, the Board of Regents requested a $10 million increase in state funding for the UI to create a rural health care partnership. The Iowa Legislature approved a $1 million increase for the UI, which will go toward cancer research.

Undergraduate resident tuition and fees at Iowa remain among the most affordable for students in the university's peer group.

Some graduate and professional colleges will keep their tuition rates flat, while the board approved slightly higher increases for specific programs based on costs.

Tuition will not increase for the College of Nursing or the Carver College of Medicine's Doctor of Physical Therapy and Master of Science in Athletic Training programs. Nonresident tuition will not increase for the Carver College of Medicine's Master of Science in Clinical Nutrition program.

Tuition increases were approved for the following:

  • College of Law: a 3% increase for resident students. Nonresident tuition will increase by the same dollar amount.
  • College of Pharmacy PharmD program: an $839 increase for resident and nonresident students.
  • College of Dentistry: a 3% increase for resident students. Nonresident tuition will increase by the same dollar amount.
  • Carver College of Medicine MD program: a 3% increase for resident and nonresident students.
  • Radiation Sciences Program, Carver College of Medicine: a $703 increase for on-campus resident and nonresident undergraduate students.
  • Master of Clinical Nutrition, Carver College of Medicine: a 3% increase for resident students.
  • Physician Assistant Program, Carver College of Medicine: a 4% increase for resident students and a 3% increase for nonresident students.

The board also approved a mandatory student fee increase of $60, from $1,997 to $2,057. The extra funds will go to technology, medical supplies, counseling services, student activities, student services (to support Cambus operations), building fees (to continue modernizing Main Library), and recreation facilities.
