On Wednesday, December 3rd, the Romanian Naval Forces military IED divers, specialized in countering explosive devices, conducted a mission to neutralize an object that was endangering navigation in the Black Sea, at the Coast Guard request.
The soldiers of the 39th Divers Center moved to the maritime district estimated at 36 nautical miles east of Constanța, with the support of the Coast Guard MAI 1107 maritime surveillance ship. Following the analysis of the drifting object, the soldiers found that it was a Sea Baby-type unmanned surface vehicle (maritime drone). The intervention team received approval to neutralize the identified object, in accordance with the standard operational procedures in force, and, at around 13:00, the maritime drone was destroyed by controlled detonation.
Since the beginning of the war in the vicinity, the Romanian Naval Forces have been permanently monitoring and supervising the maritime and fluvial area of responsibility, both with its own ships and aircraft, and in cooperation with the Romanian Armed Forces' Services and with other NATO member states.

From February 2022 up to present, freedom of navigation has been ensured for over 12,000 commercial ships that transited the Black Sea basin.
Another major threat to maritime security is represented by drifting sea mines. Approximately 150 sea mines have been neutralized in the Black Sea over the last four years, seven of which were destroyed by the Romanian Naval Forces.
Our country is also part of the Mine Countermeasures Black Sea Task Group/ MCM BS TG, alongside the Bulgarian and Turkish Naval Forces. The Romanian military sailors took over the command of this in the naval task group six months ago.
