Crapo Backs Bill to Bar Federal Funds for State Gun Registries

WASHINGTON, D.C. - U.S. Senator Mike Crapo of Idaho has joined U.S. Senator Cindy Hyde-Smith of Mississippi and U.S. Representative Paul Gosar of Arizona in introducing the Gun-owner Registration Information Protection (GRIP) Act, according to a Feb. 27, 2025 news release.

The legislation would prohibit states, local governments and other entities from using federal funding or firearms background check information to create or maintain gun owner registries.

Current federal law prohibits the federal government from permanently storing information obtained through the firearms background check process. The GRIP Act would clarify and strengthen that prohibition and extend it to states or local entities using federal funds.

The bill applies to federal grant programs including the National Criminal History Improvement Program, the NICS Amendment Records Improvement Program and the Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant Program. It would not restrict state recordkeeping for firearm permitting, law enforcement-issued firearms or reports of lost or stolen guns.

Idaho Senator Jim Risch and several other Republican senators are listed as original co-sponsors. The National Rifle Association and the National Shooting Sports Foundation have endorsed the legislation.
