The New York Times today opened applications for the Times Fellowship, its yearlong opportunity aimed at developing early career journalists for both The Times and the industry at large.
Fellows work full time, in either the newsroom or the Opinion section, producing breaking news and enterprise assignments. They are paid, receive benefits, and gain access to speakers and a writing coach who provides robust feedback and career advice.
In recent years, the program has evolved to include departments that go beyond traditional reporting, leaning especially into video and visuals. This incoming class will include reporters, as well as video and visual journalists, an audience editor, an A.I. Initiatives fellow and an elections analyst. For the first time, the Data Journalism team and Opinion Copy Desk will each welcome a fellow.
The fellowship is set to begin on June 7, 2027, and end on May 26, 2028. The most competitive applicants will have worked in professional newsrooms or have equivalent experience. All candidates should demonstrate a strong commitment to pursuing independent journalism and an eagerness to explore different kinds of storytelling.
To be considered, applicants must have fewer than five years of professional journalism experience, excluding internships. They must be authorized to work in the United States at the time of application and for the duration of the program. The Times will not sponsor visas.
Candidates should submit their materials here by 5 p.m. Eastern on Friday, Nov. 20.
Since 2019, nearly 250 fellows have contributed to The Times's mission of seeking the truth and delivering trustworthy journalism that empowers people to understand the world. Many go on to work at other top news organizations.
The Times Fellowship is part of a menu of opportunities designed for up-and-coming journalists and professionals from all backgrounds and with various skill levels. Learn more about those offerings here.
