Rosalind Helderman Joins The Times

Coverage of the Supreme Court by The Times has long been in a class by itself, a record we have built on in recent years through the comprehensive and insightful reporting and analysis of Adam Liptak, the sharp enterprise stories done by Abbie Van Sickle and the groundbreaking investigative reporting of Jodi Kantor.

Their work has only intensified our ambitions for coverage of the court, the justices, the cases that come before them and the political and ethical issues swirling around them. We want, in short, to match the scope and scale of our coverage to the immense influence wielded by the court, bringing even more firepower - and accountability reporting - to the task of covering the third branch of government.

To help us realize these heightened ambitions, we are bringing a dynamic new editor on board. Rosalind Helderman, who for more than two decades has been a reporter and editor at The Washington Post, is joining us in the newly created role of Supreme Court editor.

Roz joined the Post in 2001 as a summer intern right after graduating from Harvard, where she was managing editor of The Crimson. She went on to spend 10 years covering local news around the Washington region before joining the national staff in 2011 to cover Congress. Three years later she became one of the first reporters named to a new political investigations unit, covering the Clinton email investigation, the Mueller investigation, Donald Trump's efforts to overturn the 2020 election and the Jan. 6 attack.

She became deputy national investigations editor two years ago and then was named senior national investigations editor, running the national investigations team, with a particular focus on landing quick-turn and high-impact political accountability stories.

As a reporter, Roz was awarded the Polk Award for reporting on Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell's relationship with a political donor, and she was part of the teams that won Pulitzer Prizes for covering Russian interference in the 2016 election and the Jan. 6 attack.

As an editor, Roz has shown a mastery of complex issues and material, a keen political sense and an ability to conceive and execute sharply framed accountability stories at a swift cadence - just the combination we need. She is also known for her collegial spirit and ability to bring reporters together to run at big targets.

"Roz is an ideal editor: creative, careful and totally cool under fire," says Dave Fahrenthold, an old friend and colleague. "She takes enormous joy in helping reporters tell the best version of their story. To Roz, every word matters."

She starts next month. Please join us in welcoming her.
