DSU Students earn recognition at national FBLA Conference

MADISON, S.D. -- Dakota State University Future Business Leaders of America (DSU FBLA) students recently made their mark at the 2026 FBLA Collegiate National Leadership Conference. The event, held in Las Vegas, Nevada, from June 6-9, attracted more than 1,200 college and university students, faculty advisors, and volunteers from over 40 U.S. states and territories.

Over four days, students competed in a wide range of business, leadership, and career-focused events designed to test their knowledge and skills in areas such as finance, marketing, entrepreneurship, technology, communications, and management.

Beyond competition, attendees participated in leadership-based workshops, connected with alumni and industry professionals, explored career opportunities with employers and exhibitors, celebrated member achievements, and built connections with fellow FBLA Collegiate members from across the country while experiencing the attractions and sights of Las Vegas.

DSU was proudly represented by a delegation of five students and two advisers. Competing against thousands of the top competitors from across the country, DSU students delivered an exceptional performance, earning top placements, honors, and national recognition in competitive events and leadership programs.

The following students and groups earned top placements in competitive events:

• Casey Olson earned fourth place in Business Law and seventh place in Organizational Behavior & Leadership
• Shelby Mennis earned seventh place in International Business

Other DSU student competitors who attended the 2026 FBLA Collegiate National Leadership Conference were Tarin Bingham, Sydney Kamin, and Tobey Lee.

"We are incredibly proud of every member of the DSU community who represented our state at the National Leadership Conference," said Dr. Brenda Merkel, South Dakota FBLA State Adviser. "The success they achieved reflects their dedication to success that was demonstrated throughout the entire year. Whether they earned a national award or had the opportunity to compete, each student gained valuable experience that will serve them well beyond FBLA. The achievements celebrated in Las Vegas mark an exciting conclusion to another successful year and set the stage for even greater opportunities as South Dakota FBLA begins a new membership year in August."

Additionally, the Dakota State University chapter was recognized for its outstanding achievements by being designated a Gold Chapter for the 2025-26 academic year, a national initiative designed to encourage chapter growth, member engagement, and overall excellence. Throughout the year, chapters earn points by completing a variety of activities focused on membership recruitment, retention, leadership development, community service, and chapter operations.

Students and advisers were recognized for their contributions to FBLA throughout the past year. DSU student Tarin Bingham was recognized as the Who's Who recipient for South Dakota FBLA. Dr. Daniel Talley, DSU FBLA Faculty Co-adviser for twenty-nine years, was acknowledged as the Outstanding Local Chapter Adviser for the state of South Dakota. Both were recognized in the Parade of States at the Opening Ceremony on June 6, along with State President Shelby Mennis from Madison.
