President Gitanas Nausėda met with President of the Republic of Moldova Maia Sandu during the European Political Community summit. The bilateral meeting took place at an important moment of political change in Moldova - following the convincing victory of the pro-European PAS party in the parliamentary elections.
The Lithuanian leader congratulated President Sandu on the election results and emphasized that this was a clear choice by the people of Moldova to continue on the path of European integration.
"Lithuania welcomes the decision of Moldovan citizens to support a strong and pro-European Moldova. The new government will face the challenge of turning this trust into concrete action - reforms, resilience to external threats, and progress towards European Union membership," said the Lithuanian leader.
The President drew the attention to Russia's ongoing hybrid attacks against Moldova and called on the country to continue its fight against disinformation.
"Moldovan institutions have made great efforts to counter Russian interference in the elections, but these threats will not disappear. It is necessary to strengthen resilience in the fight against disinformation and to ensure information security," the Lithuanian leader emphasized.
President Nausėda noted that Lithuania is contributing to Moldova's European integration by providing expert assistance in areas such as energy and environmental protection. He also called on EU institutions and other member states to take more concrete action to ensure Moldova's security and strengthen democracy in the region.
"Lithuania will continue to support Moldova and Ukraine on their path to European Union membership. I invite EU institutions not to limit themselves to political declarations - it is necessary to develop joint projects, especially in the areas of information security, strategic communication, and energy resilience," said the President.
