BRAINTREE - Travelers south of Boston will soon have a new, more convenient way to begin their trip and head straight to their gate through the Massachusetts Port Authority's (Massport's) first permanent remote terminal facility at the Braintree Logan Express (LEX). Massport joined Congressman Stephen Lynch, Secretary Phil Eng, Braintree Mayor Erin Joyce, Senator William Driscoll, Senator John Keenan, Representative Mark Cusack and others today to celebrate the groundbreaking of two new parking garages, one of which will include the remote terminal facility, at the Braintree LEX site. The project is expected to support more than 2,000 direct construction jobs.
"Massachusetts is leading the way in finding innovative solutions that make travel easier, save people time and reduce traffic on our roads," said Governor Maura Healey. "We saw the success of this approach in Framingham, and now we're bringing it to the South Shore. This new terminal will give more travelers a convenient, affordable way to get to Logan Airport, while creating thousands of good-paying construction jobs and strengthening our economy. We're proud to partner with Massport to keep improving transportation options for Massachusetts residents and visitors."
Designed by Arrowstreet, with Consigli serving as construction manager, the $500 million project will transform the Braintree LEX site with two eight-level parking garages and a remote terminal facility, providing 5,500 parking spaces when fully completed. Through the remote terminal program, travelers will be able to go through TSA security in Braintree, board a dedicated secure bus and arrive at Boston Logan beyond the security checkpoint, streamlining their airport experience from start to finish for just $9.
"This project is a great example of how smart investments in transportation can make a real difference for communities across our region," said Congressman Stephen Lynch. "The new Logan Airport Remote Terminal at Braintree will give residents south of Boston another convenient way to access Logan Airport, while supporting good union construction jobs under a Project Labor Agreement and investing in infrastructure that will serve travelers for years to come. I want to thank Massport for always looking for innovative ways to improve transportation options throughout Greater Boston."
The Braintree facility will become Massport's first permanent remote terminal location, building on the success of the pilot program launched in Framingham. While the Framingham remote terminal facility and LEX garage are on separate properties, the Braintree project will bring both operations together in one integrated facility. To date, the Logan Airport Remote Terminal at Framingham pilot program has served more than 22,000 passengers, with approximately 25,000 tickets sold.
"Making it easier and more affordable for people to use public transportation to reach Logan Airport benefits travelers and our communities," said Senator William Driscoll Jr. "The new remote terminal will make the experience even more convenient by allowing passengers to complete the security process before they reach the airport. I want to thank Massport for investing in accessible transportation options and working to find new ways to make travel easier for South Shore residents. Lastly, I want to applaud Massport CEO Rich Davey and Governor Healey for their leadership, building this project with a PLA and putting their support behind the building trades."
Construction will take place in two phases, with parking and LEX service continuing throughout the project. During construction, customers will be able to reserve parking through SpotHero at the nearby Quincy Adams MBTA garage, with a dedicated shuttle service connecting them directly to Braintree LEX. Additional information on parking and construction impacts will be provided to customers as the project progresses. Phase 1 of the project, including the building of the remote terminal and one of the garages, is expected to be completed within the next few years.
"Braintree has a long history with Logan Express, and we're excited to see what's possible with this next chapter," said Braintree Mayor Erin Joyce. "The new remote terminal and expanded parking will be a tremendous amenity for our town, making it easier for more residents and travelers from across the South Shore to take advantage of Logan Express and begin their airport experience right here in Braintree. We're grateful to Massport for their partnership with the Town of Braintree and for this important investment in our community."
The new facility will also incorporate several renewable energy and sustainability features designed to support Massport's net zero goals. Both garages will feature solar panels on their facades, with one garage also featuring rooftop panels. Plans also include battery energy storage, electric vehicle charging, and geothermal systems for heating and cooling. Massport is pursuing Gold certification under both the LEED and Parksmart sustainability rating systems for the project.
"The journey to Boston Logan starts long before passengers arrive at the airport, and we want to make that experience as seamless and convenient as possible," said Rich Davey, Massport CEO. "We've seen the success of our remote terminal pilot program in Framingham and how much passengers value having an easier, less stressful way to begin their trip. The new facility builds on that success by bringing that experience to the South Shore, while also adding much-needed parking capacity for our Logan Express customers. It's all part of our broader effort to give passengers more choices and make getting to and from Boston Logan easier."
The Braintree project is a key part of Massport's larger high-occupancy vehicle (HOV) strategy that aims to give passengers more options to get to Boston Logan and reduce the number of cars on airport roadways. Between the five LEX locations, the MBTA Blue Line and Silver Line, MBTA bus service, and private bus service across the region; passengers have a variety of options for getting to and from Boston Logan more easily. In 2025, about 22% of Boston Logan passengers traveled via HOV modes, including LEX, the MBTA's Blue Line and Silver Line, and private bus services. Massport aims to increase that percentage through continued investment in convenient and reliable alternatives to driving directly to the airport.
Logan Express provides frequent service directly to Boston Logan's terminal curbs. In 2025, the service carried over 2.5 million passengers, with Braintree serving as the second-busiest location after Framingham. With five locations-Framingham, Woburn, Braintree, Danvers, and Boston's Back Bay-the LEX network offers service to every terminal at Boston Logan, making travel faster, easier, and more convenient.
