Six unique certificate programs offered at The University of Akron

At The University of Akron (UA), students are finding new ways to say YES to supercharging their career prospects by exploring some of the University's most unique certificate programs. From the new word of artificial intelligence to preserving the past in museum and archive studies, UA gives students the opportunity to select from a variety of certificates, explore emerging and high-growth industries, and stand out in the job market. Here are some of the most forward-thinking programs offered at UA.

Construction field operations

The certificate in Construction Field Operations is offered through UA's College of Engineering and Polymer Science. This certificate prepares undergraduate degree-seeking and non-degree-seeking students for a career in the construction industry as a field inspector or first-line foreman. Students in this program work with experienced faculty members to learn the latest in construction technology and use their knowledge to have a successful career in the construction industry.

Artificial intelligence (AI)

Offered by the Buchtel College of Arts and Sciences, the Artificial Intelligence certificate aims to help undergraduate students navigate the philosophical issues associated with AI. Students in this program take the time to become more informed on the topic of AI and the associated ethics through courses such as Digital Ethics and Philosophy of Mind. With so much of our world now driven by AI, this certificate gives students an inside track in a host of career fields.

Museum and Archives Studies

The Certificate in Museum and Archives Studies is a partnership between the Department of History in the Buchtel College of Arts and Sciences, and the Cummings Center for the History of Psychology, that allows undergraduate students to learn all about the theory and practice of working in museums, archives and historical sites. Through the coursework, students learn the skills of preservation, conservation, presentation and interpretation of archival materials. Students get immediate field experience as they partner on a capstone project with local museums, parks, government centers and other collecting institutions in the community.

Professional Social Media

Offered by the School of Communication, the Professional Social Media certificate is available to any student or professional who is interested in learning the ins and outs of social media. Through this certificate, students learn to generate content, write for online platforms, use analytics to measure their success, and work with a real client to develop a social media campaign.

Esports Business

The Certificate in Esports Business aims to prepare students planning to work in the esports industry with knowledge about the current global esports ecosystem. Offered by the College of Business, students are encouraged to engage in an intellectual discussion of the esports industry through courses such as Global Esports Business Management and Esports Event Management.

Addiction Services

Offered by the College of Health and Human Services, the basic Certificate in Addiction Services is best suited for students looking to enhance their knowledge of addiction and addiction treatment, and is designed to meet the educational requirements for licensing by the Ohio Chemical Dependency Professionals Board. Courses such as Substance Use and Abuse, and Addiction Screening, Assessment, and Treatment Planning, prepare the student for work in a helping profession. Upon completion of the certificate, students are prepared to sit for the Chemical Dependency Counselor Assistant (CDCA) licensing exam.
