In 2016, the EU signed a commitment aimed at helping to develop Malawi's first ever continuous and reliable national registration system.
In 2024, Malawi achieved full registration coverage of the adult population, with the National ID ensuring very many benefits across several sectors including voter registration, social protection targeting, and payroll management.
Ambassador Aristi-Gaztelumendi was honoured to join the Minister of Homeland Security Hon. Peter Mukhitho, the Deputy Minister, the Ambassadors of Ireland and Norway and the UNDP Resident Representative in Dedza, to witness phase 1 of the mass birth registration campaign, which essentially aims to register 4.6 million children nationwide and close the gap to ensure universal and full registration coverage for all Malawians.
The benefits of this monumental campaign cannot be overemphasized. By ensuring each child has a legal identity, we commit to preventing child marriages, aim to combat child labour and trafficking and safeguarding children's rights within the education, health, and justice sectors through enhanced digital technologies.
