Today, Secretly Distribution announces worldwide distribution deals with two independent record labels defining culture and record collecting on both ends of the American coasts: Los Angeles' Naya Beat and Brooklyn's Nature Sounds.
Founded in 2019 by Filip Nikolic (Turbotito) and Raghav Mani (Ragz), Naya Beat, which translates from Hindi as "new beat," is focused on uncovering dance and electronic music from South Asia and the diaspora. Having found quick success with their acclaimed Naya Beat Volume series, the company's string of coveted reissues, remix projects and compilations have continually brought new life to lost sounds - from the resurgence of disco-jazz legend Asha Puthli to the holy grail of Punjabi Disco - and have been supported by Solomun, Peggy Gou, Damian Lazarus, Gilles Peterson, Nu Genea, DJ Harvey, Tim Sweeney, Colleen Murphy and more of the most respected selectors in the world.
Since its formation in 2003, Nature Soundshas been rooted in hip-hop and the musical culture that surrounds it. For more than 20 years, the label has given artists the freedom to develop and present their music on their own terms, while building a catalog that reflects their love of hip-hop, jazz, soul, funk, reggae, and crate-digging culture.
"Partnering with Secretly Distribution greatly empowers our mission of bringing South Asian dance and electronic music and culture to the world. We're very excited about the possibilities ahead for our archival material as well as our work with new and emerging South Asian artists."
- Filip Nikolic & Raghav Mani, Co-Founders of Naya Beat
"We've always believed in the importance of physical releases and the connection they create between artists and their fans. That's a big part of why Secretly Distribution feels like a natural fit. They understand the value of independent music and physical retail, while also having a strong understanding of the digital and streaming landscape. It gives us an opportunity to build on what we've been doing without losing the things that have always defined Nature Sounds."
- Devin Horwitz, Founder of Nature Sounds
"Being able to support diverse labels like these is why we show up every day. For more than two decades Devin and Nature Sounds have been a key player in the underground hip-hop scene, and their catalog is stacked with records we love. And Naya Beat is one of those labels with such a unique perspective and vision, in just a few years they have turned us on to so much incredible music and history. We are thrilled to be a part of the next chapter of these creative independent labels!"
- Josh Madell, Director of Artist & Label Strategy at Secretly Distribution
Secretly Distribution will now handle physical and digital music distribution, digital and retail marketing, and technological support for all of each label's releases, beginning with an impending collection of dancefloor remixes and reworks from Naya Beat, as well as Nature Sounds' new projects from LA underground vet Blu and Brooklyn MC Your Old Droog.
Naya Beat and Nature Sounds join a distributed label roster that includes Secretly affiliates Dead Oceans, drink sum wtr, Ghostly International, Jagjaguwar, Merge Records, Sacred Bones Records, Secretly Canadian and Numero Group, in addition to label partners like Hayley Williams' Post Atlantic, Rhymesayers, Third Man Records, Ipecac Recordings, Run For Cover, Asthmatic Kitty Records, Joyful Noise, Father/Daughter, Big Crown, Colemine, Jazz Is Dead, Oh Boy Records, Org Music, Invada Records, Awesome Tapes From Africa and the recently announced Blue Flowers, Hopestreet Recordings, Ubiquity and more.
