Undersecretary María Teresa Mercado Pérez traveled to Portugal on a working visit to take part in the third EuroAmericas Forum in Cascais, in which Portuguese President António José Seguro and Minister of State and Foreign Affairs Paulo Rangel also participated.
In her remarks at the forum, Undersecretary Mercado said that in the current geopolitical landscape, Mexico is working to build a strategy that reconciles openness with sovereignty and diversification with regional integration. She noted that Mexico has a combination of geopolitical assets: deep economic integration with North America, access to both the Pacific and Atlantic oceans, and an open economy with close political, economic, and cultural ties to Latin America, Europe, and Asia-Pacific.
Undersecretary Mercado led the Mexican delegation during the visit, from November 1 to 3. The delegation included Mexico's ambassador to Portugal, Bruno Figueroa Fischer, and its ambassador to Belgium, Luxembourg, and the European Union, Esteban Moctezuma Barragán.
She also met with Portugal's Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, Ana Isabel Xavier, to discuss the bilateral agenda and changes in the global environment. Both officials welcomed the excellent state of bilateral relations on every front.
Undersecretary Mercado toured the exhibition "Dia dos Mortos no México: arte e tradição," organized by the Mexican Embassy in Portugal at the National Museum of Ethnology. There she met with members of the Friendship Groups of Mexico's Chamber of Deputies and Portugal's Assembly of the Republic. The exhibition shows how much Portugal appreciates Mexican traditions, particularly the celebration of the Day of the Dead.
With this visit, the Government of Mexico reaffirms its commitment to strengthening its ties of friendship and cooperation with Portugal, based on dialogue, mutual respect, and shared principles for the benefit of both peoples and governments.
