Thanks in part to a local grant from Union Pacific's Community Ties Giving Program, SOS Outreach is expanding its mentor program in North Lake Tahoe, California, working to help more students strengthen life skills and discover their full potential.
"SOS Outreach empowers kids to realize what's possible by connecting them with caring mentors and building life skills through outdoor experiences," said Seth Ehrlich, executive director. "Union Pacific's support allows us to deepen our mentor program in Truckee, a community where the railroad literally runs through the heart of town. Their partnership makes a meaningful impact on the youth we serve."
SOS Outreach engages more than 3,800 young people each year, beginning in 4th grade and continuing through high school graduation. Participants start with five on-mountain days focused on the organization's six core values, learning to ski or snowboard while forming strong peer and mentor connections. As students progress, the program expands to include leadership workshops, community service projects, and skill-building sessions focused on communication, goal-setting, public speaking and career readiness.
In North Lake Tahoe, one of SOS's largest program sites, the Union Pacific grant enabled the organization to grow its mentor program, increasing the number of adult-youth matches and creating more consistent, long-term support for over 350 participants. This structure helps students build confidence, develop resilience and stay connected to positive role models throughout critical years of personal development.
"Our alumni are living proof of what's possible when young people feel supported," Ehrlich said. "More than 100 former participants now return as mentors, volunteers or staff. Their commitment reflects the long-term impact of this program and the strength of the community it creates."
Union Pacific's Community Ties Giving Program supports local organizations that strengthen communities where railroad employees live and work. Its partnership with SOS Outreach is helping ensure students have opportunities to grow, lead and succeed.
