The City of North Port celebrated the reopening of the playground at Pine Park on May 6 with a ribbon-cutting ceremony highlighting new amenities designed to better serve neighborhood families for years to come.
The replacement project was completed after the previous playground, originally installed in 2013, reached the end of its lifecycle after years of heavy use. The playground welcomed more than 32,000 visits last year alone, underscoring its importance as a neighborhood gathering space.
After evaluating the aging structure and gathering feedback from nearby residents, North Port Parks & Recreation identified several priorities for the replacement, including additional shade, expanded play opportunities, more climbing features, sensory-focused elements and design features that reflect Florida's natural environment.
The new playground includes multiple climbing structures, sensory play features and a separate shaded swing area. Families visiting the park can also look for hidden design elements inspired by wildlife commonly found in the area, including a snake, frog, tortoise and butterflies.
"This project reflects our commitment to maintaining parks that our residents rely on every day," said Cheryl Greiner, Senior Business Manager and project manager. "Investments like this may seem simple, but they play an important role in supporting strong neighborhoods and preserving quality of life."
The project was funded through a $225,000 Capital Improvement Program investment supported by Surtax dollars, allowing the City to reinvest in an existing neighborhood park that continues to see significant community use.
Since its original dedication in the late 1980s, Pine Park has served as an important neighborhood destination where families gather, children play and neighbors connect. The updated playground ensures the space continues to evolve alongside community needs while providing safe and engaging recreation opportunities for future generations.
