Supreme Court Rules in Favor of Internet Providers in Cox v. Sony, Protecting Broadband Access for All Americans

Washington, D.C. (March 25, 2026) - Today, The U.S. Supreme Court unanimously ruled in favor of internet providers in Cox Communications, Inc. v. Sony Music Entertainment, reversing a lower court decision that had threatened to impose unprecedented and costly copyright liability on internet providers. The Common Sense Copyright Coalition, convened by USTelecom - The Broadband Association, applauded the ruling as a critical victory for consumers and for the future of internet access in America.

The following statement is from Josh Bercu, Senior Vice President of Policy at USTelecom, who is leading the Common Sense Copyright Coalition:

"Today's Supreme Court decision affirms the foundational principle that internet providers are not the internet police. By getting this right, the Court has ensured consumers are not at risk of losing access to telehealth, online education, remote work, and other broadband-powered opportunities as a result of shortsighted and unworkable legal theories."
