March 17, 2026

CINCINNATI, OH - Today, Sarah Wilson, U.S. Department of Education Deputy Assistant Secretary for Elementary and Secondary Education, visited Monfort Heights Elementary School as part of the Department of Education's national History Rocks!Trail to Independence tour, in celebration of America's upcoming 250th birthday. The tour aims to strengthen civic literacy by helping students personally connect with America's founding principles.

Two hundred students in fourth and fifth grades participated in interactive games designed to deepen their understanding of American history and civics, explore the themes of civic engagement and patriotism, and learn about the important role Ohio has played in our nation's history. The event opened with remarks from Principal Trey Rischmann, followed by Wilson.

"I'm absolutely thrilled to return to my home state to celebrate a monumental milestone-250 years of America!" said Deputy Assistant Secretary for Elementary and Secondary Education Sarah Wilson. "What better place to honor this incredible journey than in a school, where the future is being shaped every day, and where the spirit of learning, community, and possibility reflects the values that have carried our nation for two and a half centuries."
