BOSTON-September 9, 2025-The Health & Fitness Association (HFA) today thanked President Donald J. Trump, Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy, and the Administration for recognizing the urgent need to address childhood physical inactivity in the release today of its "Make Our Children Healthy Again" report.
The report notes childhood physical inactivity as a driver of chronic disease and outlines new federal actions to increase physical activity.
"These are thoughtful efforts that mark a meaningful step forward in strengthening the health of America's children," said Mike Goscinski, vice president of government affairs for the Health & Fitness Association. "Recognizing physical activity as a vital sign is a game-changer for children's health. It sends a clear signal that movement matters-not just in reversing obesity and chronic disease but also in building healthier, happier kids. We look forward to working with the Administration and our partners to ensure these recommendations are implemented quickly and effectively."
The MAHA strategies to help reverse inactivity trends include:
HFA emphasized that much of the groundwork for these efforts is already in motion. From standardized measures of fitness as a vital sign to school-based and community-led programs that encourage daily movement, the health and fitness industry is prepared to help drive quick adoption and rollout.
The strategy also prioritizes efforts to increase public awareness of fitness and healthy living, including a revitalized Presidential Fitness Award, national campaigns underscoring the importance of daily activity, and coordinated messaging on how physical activity supports both physical and mental health. These efforts will complement school and community initiatives to ensure children have more opportunities to move every day.
The Health & Fitness Association stands ready to partner with the Administration and the President's Council on Sports, Fitness, and Nutrition to ensure these initiatives are implemented effectively and equitably. Together, these steps can create lasting change-getting children active today and establishing healthier habits for a lifetime.
