Two Reasons To Stay Away From Ciena Stock, Even After Its Fall

Ciena (CIEN) stock lost 40.1% between May 1 and October 30, 2026, a period when the S&P 500 gained 5.4%. Ciena's revenue, however, rose 37% in fiscal Q3 2026 from a year earlier. The shares still trade at 69.6 times earnings, compared with 22.6 for the S&P 500, meaning the fall alone does not make this an easy call. How much of each sale does Ciena keep as profit, compared with the S&P 500 taken as a whole?

Ciena's Operating Margin Still Trails The S&P 500

Over the twelve months ended August 1, 2026, Ciena kept 14.1% of its revenue as operating profit, trailing the 18.7% kept by the S&P 500. Buyers paying Ciena's price are therefore not paying for the margin it earned over the past twelve months.

They may be betting on where that margin is heading. Ciena's operating margin has risen in each of the last four quarters, reaching 18.1% in fiscal Q3 2026, up from 6.2% a year earlier. Part of what comes next may be pricing. On the September 3, 2026 call, management said it expects price increases ranging from high single digits to the low twenties in percent, depending on the product line, and that some of those increases will apply to orders already in its backlog.

Management also guided its own adjusted operating margin, a measure that differs from the reported one, to a range of 25% to 27% for fiscal 2027. If the climb stalls, buyers would be holding a stock priced well above the market with a margin below the market's.

Ciena Is Paying Up Front To Secure Parts

In the weeks before its September 3, 2026 call, Ciena finalized long-term agreements to secure the supply of certain key components through 2029. Management said the deals add capacity to support growing customer demand. The company also said it expected cash from operations to fall in fiscal Q4 2026 as it paid out on those agreements.

Cash was already thin next to profit before those payments. Ciena generated $116 million of free cash flow in fiscal Q3 2026, down from $135 million a year earlier. Its net income that quarter was $266 million, more than twice its free cash flow.

Ciena still cannot build as much as customers want. Management said fiscal 2027 revenue would be higher if the company had more supply. Management does not expect supply and demand to come back into balance before 2028, so Ciena may keep paying for parts for some time.

How Much Business Has Ciena Already Booked?

Ciena ended fiscal Q3 2026 with a backlog of $8.5 billion in orders not yet delivered, an increase of $800 million in the quarter. Management said it expected that backlog to exceed $10 billion by the end of fiscal 2026.

Citing better visibility into demand, management gave an early view of fiscal 2027, projecting revenue growth of at least 30%, to at least $8.3 billion to $8.4 billion. Management described that as a floor, and it is still a forecast, not a result.

Ciena sells to a narrow group, though. About half of its business is now directly with hyperscalers, the companies that run the largest cloud data centers, management said on the September 3, 2026 call. Two customers each provided more than 10% of revenue in fiscal Q3 2026, meaning Ciena sells much of what it makes to a few very large buyers.

Ciena is expected to report fiscal Q4 2026 results in December 2026, covering a quarter in which management guided revenue to $1.75 billion, plus or minus $50 million. Ciena's reported operating margin for that quarter is the figure to watch.

How To Act On CIEN?

Not necessarily on Ciena alone, if your goal is long-term wealth. Wealth is built by owning the companies that keep outperforming, the leaders of their industries, wherever they are. Ciena is one. Over the five years to October 2026, its stock rose 491%, ahead of 31 of the 35 other companies in Communications Equipment, where the typical company rose 51%.

Finding companies like these takes comparison across industries and sectors, and that is what the Trefis High Quality (HQ) Portfolio does. It holds 30 quality companies in equal weight and, since its inception in September 2020, has returned more than 105%, ahead of a benchmark that combines the S&P 500, S&P Mid-cap and Russell 2000. See how we find the leaders.
