BGMC/GVI earns the highest 3-star rating from STS

We are proud to share that the Buffalo General Medical Center/Gates Vascular Institute (BGMC/GVI) has once again earned a three-star rating from the Society of Thoracic Surgeons (STS) for excellence in isolated coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) and multiprocedural cardiac surgery. This is the highest possible rating and reflects our continued commitment to exceptional patient care and outcomes.

The most recent STS Adult Cardiac Surgery Database report, covering July 2022 through June 2025, includes data from 941 programs across the U.S. and Canada. Achieving three stars in both the Isolated CABG and Multiprocedural categories highlights the consistent quality and expertise of our cardiac surgery team. It places the GVI among the top-performing cardiac surgery programs in North America.

The STS star rating system is widely recognized as one of the most rigorous and respected measures of healthcare quality. Ratings are based on objective data that assess surgical outcomes, including mortality, complications, and adherence to best practices. Historically, only 21% of programs achieve a three-star rating for isolated CABG, and approximately 28% for multiprocedural surgery, making this achievement a true marker of excellence.

This recognition is a testament to the hard work, skill and dedication of our entire cardiac surgery team, surgeons, anesthesiologists, nurses, techs, and staff throughout the continuum of care. Your efforts ensure that our patients receive the highest standard of care every day.
