Deputy Prime Minister for Foreign and European Affairs Filip Ivanović met today in Dublin with Tánaiste, Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade, and Minister for Defence of Ireland Simon Harris.
During the meeting, Deputy Prime Minister Ivanović emphasized that the purpose of his visit was to secure Ireland's support in the context of its upcoming Presidency of the Council of the EU, as well as to further strengthen the friendly and partnership ties between the two countries. He briefed his counterpart on the course and dynamics of Montenegro's accession negotiations with the European Union, highlighting the reforms and results achieved within the process.
Tánaiste Harris commended Montenegro's dedicated efforts on its European path, stressing that the country's reform achievements demonstrate full alignment with the EU's Common Foreign and Security Policy. He underlined Ireland's strong support for Montenegro and offered all necessary assistance throughout the accession process, adding that EU enlargement is crucial for the credibility of European policy.
The two officials agreed that Montenegro is the frontrunner in the accession negotiations and underlined the importance of a merit-based approach, ensuring that reforms and progress are assessed objectively. Harris further highlighted the benefits of EU membership and stressed Ireland's wish for other countries to share in the advantages of enlargement, while Ivanović expressed confidence that Ireland's experience and expertise would be of great value for Montenegro as the process advances.
They also discussed global and regional developments, underscoring Montenegro's role as a reliable partner in shaping policies and initiatives at both levels. It was concluded that intensified bilateral contacts and cooperation will contribute to further advancing Montenegro's European path and to promoting the country as a credible and responsible EU partner.
